Early Life

Jones was born to Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones in Manhattan on March 30, 1979. Her father was a famous Indian Bengali musician, and her mother worked as a concert producer. Her parents separated in 1986, and she moved with her mother. She spent her childhood time in Grapevine, Texas.

Jones started singing as a child and attended piano and voice lessons. When she was 11 years old, Jones and her mother moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where she attended Grapevine Middle School and Grapevine High School. Later, she was transferred to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas.

During high school, Jones sang in the school choir and played the alto saxophone by participating in the school band. When she was 16, Jones changed her name from Geethali Norah Jones Shankar to Norah Jones with her parents’ consent. While in high school, she became the winner of the Down Beat Student Music Awards in 1996 and 1997.

After graduating high school, Jone majored in jazz piano at the University of North Texas. Then, she joined the UNT Jazz Singers and met her future collaborator, Jesse Harris. In 1999, she moved to New York City and started a band with Harris.

Professional Career

Before becoming a recording artist, Jones began her career as a lounge singer. She also performed with artists such as Peter Malick, Wax Poetic, and Charlie Hunter. Then, she signed a recording deal with Blue Note. She released her debut album, Come Away with Me, in 2002, reaching number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Its single “Don’t Know Why” reached No.30 in the chart of Billboard Hot 100.

In 2003, Jones won five Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her second studio album, Feels Like Home, was released in 2004 and earned three Grammy Award nominations. Time magazine named her one of the most influential people of 2004.

In 2007, Jones released her third album, Not Too Late, on which she wrote or co-wrote every single. The album topped in twenty countries and sold 4 million copies worldwide. Her fourth studio album, The Fall, was released in 2009 and debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200. 

Jones worked with Danger Mouse and released her fifth studio album, Little Broken Hearts, in 2012. Jones’s other studio albums include Day Breaks (2016), Pick Me Up Off the Floor (2020), I Dream of Christmas (2021), and Visions (2024).

Jones married keyboardist Pete Remm in 2014. They began dating in 2012 while recording her album Little Broken Hearts. The couple has two children, a son and a daughter.
