Hegseth was born in Forest Lake, Minnesota, on June 6, 1980. He was the son of Penny and Brian Hegseth. He started his education at Forest Lake Area High School, and in 2003, he earned his Bachelor of Arts at Princeton University. He attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Havard University and received his Master of Public Policy in 2013.
Professional Life
After graduating from Princeton University, he started his career as an equity capital markets analyst at Bear Stearns and also served as a reserve infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard. In 2004, he worked with the Minnesota National Guard as an infantry platoon leader in Guantánamo Bay. At that time, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
When he returned from Cuba, he volunteered to serve in Baghdad and Samarra. In Baghdad, he continued as an infantry platoon leader; in Samarra, he served as a civil-military operations officer. During his time in Iraq, he received the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and a second Army Commendation Medal.
