Wood was born to Roy Wood Sr. and Joyce Dugan Wood on December 11, 1978, in Manhattan, New York City. His mother was a college administrator, and his father worked as a radio broadcasting and journalism pioneer who covered various social-related news, including the civil rights movement, the Soweto uprising, and the Rhodesian Bush War.
His parents separated when he was a child, and he lived with his mother in Memphis, Tennessee. However, they reconciled when he was in second grade and moved to Birmingham. Wood went on to attend Central Park Elementary and Center Street Middle School. In 1996, he completed his graduation from Ramsay High School. After that, he joined Florida A&M University and earned a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism in 2001.
Professional Career
During college, Wood began his job as a morning news reporter on the radio station WBHJ 95.7 Jamz Hot 105.7, covering the news of Birmingham. After that, he decided to focus his career on comedy, and in 1998, at the age of 19, he began his career as a standup and opened for Tommy Davidson.
After graduating in 2001, Wood returned to Birmingham and joined the Buckwilde Morning Show on WBHJ 95.7 JAMZ as a head writer/producer. He served in that position until 2006. He continued his work on radio by making prank calls and content for various morning shows.
Wood released three prank-call CDs titled My Momma Made Me Wear This (2003), Confessions of a Bench Warmer (2005), and I’ll Slap You to Sleep (2007). Numerous hi-hop mix tapes also featured his pranks. After moving to Los Angeles, Wood participated in the seventh season of the reality series Last Comic Standing on NBC in 2010 and finished third.
