Early Life
Raimi was born to Celia Barbara and Leonard Ronald Raimi on October 23, 1959, in Royal Oak, Michigan. His parents were merchants. He had four siblings. His ancestors were Jewish immigrants from Russia and Hungary.
Raimi’s older brother, Sander, died when he was 15 after drowning in Israel. Raimi mentioned that Sanders introduced him to Spider-Man and his love for comics.
Raimi graduated from Groves High School. After that, he studied English at Michigan State University and Università Bocconi but didn’t complete his education.
Professional Career
Raimi became interested in filmmaking after his father bought a movie camera. In 1975, he started making Super 8 movies with his friend Bruce Campbell. In 1978, he made a 32-minute horror film, Within the Woods, after teaming up with his brother’s roommate Robert Tapert and Campell. His debut feature film was It’s Murder!
After that, Raimi raised funds to produce his horror film The Evil Dead through his family, friends, and several investors. The film was released in 1981 with a budget of $375,000, and it earned $2.6 million at the box office.
His third film was Crimewave, released in 1985, but it was unsuccessful. After that, he concentrated on The Evil Dead sequel, Evil Dead II (1987). Its second sequel, Army of Darkness, was released in 1992.
