Smith was born to David Shepard Smith, Sr., and Dora Ellen Anderson on January 14, 1964, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. His father was a cotton merchant, and his mother was an English teacher. He studied at Marshall Academy, a preparatory school in Holly Springs. His parents separated after high school graduation, and he moved with his mother to Florida.
Smith joined the University of Mississippi to study journalism but dropped out and started working as a reporter in Panama City, Florida.
Professional Career
Smith started his television career on WCJB-TV in Gainesville, Florida. Then, he did reporting jobs at several television stations, including WBBH-TV, WSVN, and WCPX-TV, before becoming a correspondent for A Current Affair. In 1996, Smith joined Fox News Channel after working as a correspondent for News Edge.
Smith reported several essential news stories for Fox News, including Princess Diana’s death in 1997, President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial in 1998, and the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.
