As of 2024, Colbert’s net worth is approximately $75 million. He earned a significant portion of his income through his television career. The Late Night Show contributed significantly to his wealth. During the show’s first few seasons, his annual salary was $6 million. In 2019, he signed a new contract with CBS Corp, which increased his annual salary to $15 million.

Early Life

Colbert was born to James William Colbert Jr. and Lorna Elizabeth Colbert on  May 13, 1964, in Washington, D.C. He is the youngest of eleven children to his parents. His father was an immunologist and became the dean at Saint Louis University, Yale University, and Medical University of South Carolina.

When he was 10 years old, his father and his two brothers, Peter and Paul, died in a flight crash in Charlotte, North Carolina, in September 1974. After that, Colbert’s mother relocated his family from James Island to downtown Charleston. There, his mother started a bed and breakfast in the carriage house.

Colbert attended Episcopal Porter-Gaud School and was involved in several school plays. At a young age, he was initially interested in studying marine biology. Still, a perforated eardrum surgery caused him inner ear damage, and he became deaf in his right ear. This condition forced him to leave his career, which required scuba diving. 

Colbert attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, and in 1982, he majored in philosophy. In 1984, he transferred to Northwestern University to study performance in theater major. In 1986, he graduated from the School of Communication.

Professional Career

Colbert was hired to perform with Second City’s touring company. There, he met the actors Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello, who were offered him to create a TV series for HBO Downtown Productions. He worked with them on the sketch comedy show Exit 57, which debuted on Comedy Central between 1995 and 1996. 

After the cancellation of Exit 57, he became a cast member and writer on The Dana Carvey Show for six months. Then, he worked for the shows, including Saturday Night Live, The Dana Carvey Show, and Good Morning America.

In 1997, he was hired by The Daily Show’s producer, Madeline Smithberg, on a trial basis. At the same time, he worked with Comedy Central’s Strangers with Candy, so he accepted a reduced role on The Daily Show.

In 1997, Colbert joined the cast of The Daily Show and won three Emmy Awards as a writer. In October 2005, he started hosting his show, The Colbert Report, on Comedy Central, which continued until December 2014.

After that, he hosted The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which premiered in September 2015. Since 2024, he has produced CBS’s After Midnight, a late-night comedy game show.

Personal Life

Colbert married Evelyn McGee in 1993, and they have three children. The couple currently lives in Montclair, New Jersey.

During his time in college and Second City, Colbert suffered from anxiety and depression, and he took medication for them.
