Early Life
Vega was born to Pat Vega and Richard Peck on July 11, 1959, in Santa Monica, California. Her mother was a computer system analyst. Soon after her birth, her parents separated, and her mother married Ed Vega, a writer and teacher from Puerto Rico.

Her family moved to New York City when she was two and a half years old. She spent her childhood in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side. At 19, she learned about her biological father, Peck, and met him for the first time in her late 20s. She studied modern dance at the High School of Performing Arts and graduated in 1977. Then, she attended Barnard College and graduated in English literature.
Professional Career
After graduating, Vega started performing at small venues in Greenwich Village. At that time, some of her first songs were published in Fast Folk Musical Magazine. In 1984, she signed a major label recording contract, making her one of the first Fast Folk artists to achieve this.
In 1985, she debuted her self-titled studio album, which earned positive feedback from critics. It also earned platinum status in the United Kingdom. Lenny Kaye and Steve Addabbo produced the album featuring her acoustic guitar. At that time, she also wrote Songs from Liquid Days’s two songs, Lightning and Freezing, composed by Philip Glass.
In 1986, Vega co-wrote the song “Left of Center” with Steve Addabbo for the film Pretty in Pink. The following year, she released her next studio album, Solitude Standing, which sold over one million copies in the U.S.
The album’s second single, Luka, charted number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is written from an abused child’s point of view, which she later revealed dealt with the abuse she suffered from her stepfather.
Vega released her third album, Days of Open Hand, in 1990, followed by her fourth album, 99.9F°, in 1992. The fourth album sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S. and received Gold from the RIAA. In 1996, she released her fifth studio album, Nine Objects of Desire. Her next album, Songs in Red and Grey, was released in 2001.
In 2003, she became the host of American Mavericks, an American Public Media radio series. In 2006, she signed a contract with Blue Note Records and released her seventh studio album.
