Early Life

Holmes was born to Loutelious Holmes Sr. and Mary Ann Stevenson in West Memphis, Arkansas, on August 19, 1977. He was the younger of his parents’ two children. His family nicknamed him T.Jr., and when he started his professional career, he used the name “T.J.” and earned a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Arkansas.

Professional Career

Holmes was hired by KSNF Channel 16 in Joplin, Missouri, while he was studying at the University of Arkansas. He worked as a producer, weekend anchor, and assignment reporter there for around a year. In 2000, he moved back to his home in Arkansas. Later, he became a general assignment reporter at the CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock, and within a year, he got promoted to a weekend anchor.

In 2003, Holmes became an evening news anchor at NBC’s O&O station KNTV in the San Francisco Bay Area. While working at that network, he traveled to Athens, Greece, for 2004 Olympics coverage. While at KNTV, Holmes covered various stories that gained nationwide attention. 

In 2006, Holmes was appointed by CNN as a news anchor and correspondent. He became the co-anchor of CNN Saturday & Saturday Morning with Betty Nguyen. He anchored the newscast solo from March 2010 after Nguyen left for CBS. At CNN, he became the reporter of many breaking news events.

During the September 11th attacks’s 10th anniversary, Holmes anchored from Ground Zero. In 2008, he covered the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States, as it was the historic first papal visit to the nation. He covered the first stories of people who survived the US Airways Flight 1549 crash landing in the Hudson River in January 2009.

Holmes also became the anchor of news stories such as the 2006 Saddam Hussein execution, the 2008 Mumbai, India terrorist attack, and the 2007 Glasgow Airport terrorist attack. His coverage of the 2008 presidential primary campaigns and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill earned Peabody Awards. In 2011, he left CNN after Christmas Day.

In December 2011, Holmes announced he had signed a deal with BET Networks. The following year, he became the host of the network’s Don’t Sleep, which premiered in October 2012. In March 2023, BET announced that the program had been canceled after Holmes departed the network.

In 2014, Holmes joined ABC News as a freelance/temporary. There, he substituted the programs World News Now and America This Morning. In December 2014, Holmes became the permanent co-anchor of World News Now. He joined GMA3: What You Need to Know in 2020 as a co-anchor.

Personal Life

Holmes married Amy Ferson in 2004, and they divorced in 2007. From his previous relationships, he has two children. In March 2010, he married Marilee Fiebig, an Atlanta-area attorney. After twelve years of marriage, they separated in 2022. The couple shares a daughter, who was born in January 2013.
