Killam was born in Culver City, California, on April 1, 1982. His mother was a singer-songwriter who toured with The Charlie Daniels Band, and his father was a City Garage Theatre Group member who aspired to become an actor. He grew up in Big Bear Lake, California, until age 15.
Killam went on to attend Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. After that, he joined as a musical theater student at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. He spent most of his time becoming part of UCLA’s Theater Festival there. He left college to pursue a career in acting.

Killam made his film debut in 1994 by appearing as a boy in Peter Segal’s Naked Gun 33+1⁄3: The Final Insult. In 2000, he appeared in an episode of The Jersey, Judging Amy, and Touched by an Angel. Between 2000 and 2002, he became part of Nickelodeon’s The Amanda Show, where he played the role of Spaulding.
