Chapman released her debut album, Tracy Chapman, in 1988 under Elektra, and it became a commercial and critical success. Its single, “Fast Car,” became the most popular from the album, and she performed it at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium, London.
