Early Life
Carlton was born to Heidi Lee and Edmund Carlton on August 16, 1980, in Milford, Pennsylvania. Her father was a pilot, and her mother worked as a school music teacher. She has two siblings, a sister and a brother. Her mother’s family is Jewish.
Carlton developed an interest in music at a very young age. When she was two, her mother began teaching classical music after watching her play piano at Disneyland. She became passionate about ballet at age nine and enrolled at the School of American Ballet in 1994.
After graduation, Carlton began singing in nightclubs, making her comfortable on stage. Then, she moved to New York City and attended Columbia University, but she dropped out within a year.

Professional Career
After meeting him at a singer-songwriter circle, Carlton recorded a demo for songwriter/producer Peter Zizzo. Later, she signed a record deal with A&M Records and started working on an album titled Rinse. But it was never released.
A few tracks of that album were reworked for her debut studio album, Be Nobody, released in April 2002, and reached the top five on the US Billboard Hot 200. The album’s two million copies were sold worldwide.
The song “Carnival” by Rinse was recorded for SpyHunter 2 as “Dark Carnival.” A&M president Ron Fair heard her “A Thousand Miles” demo, organized a recording session, and arranged the song himself. The song became a huge success and earned Grammy Awards nominations, including Song of the Year.
In November 2004, Carlton released her second album, Harmonium, debuting at number 33 on the Billboard 200. However, it didn’t gain much popularity, and less than 150,000 copies were sold. It included a darker theme than her debut album. In August 2004, the album’s single “White House” was released to radio and peaked at number 86 on the Billboard 100.
In 2005, Carlton left A&M Records after her promotion to Harmonium ended. She was featured in the Italian singer Zucchero Fornaciari’s song “Indaco Dagli Occhi Del Cielo.”
Carlton released her third album, Heroes and Thieves, in October 2007 and debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200. To promote her album, she started the Haunted Club Tour. The album’s first single, “ Nolita Fairytale,” reached number 26 on the chart of Billboard’s Adult Top 40 Tracks.
