In a heartwarming display of responsibility, acclaimed actress Amy Adams recently revealed that she declined to perform in an inappropriate “Saturday Night Live” sketch to shield her young fans.
Former “SNL” cast member Andy Samberg claims that Samberg and Adams intended the skit in question to be a “very dirty” duet. Samberg, who is part of the popular comedy troupe The Lonely Island, shared details about the scrapped sketch on a recent episode of “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast.”
Samberg narrated, “It was as if we were an elderly couple enjoying a picnic, and a scorpion stung one of us.” “And then I’m dying or something, and the one lament on my deathbed is that we didn’t explore things more sexually in our life, and it’s this huge up anthem about that.”
Despite the comedic premise, Adams ultimately concluded that she could not, in good conscience, participate in the risqué sketch. The actress, who had recently starred in the family-friendly film “Enchanted,” was concerned that her young fans might accidentally discover the NSFW content.
“She was like, ‘That’s really funny. I can’t do that. Little girls are currently engrossed in the ‘Enchanted’ series. They will find this, and it will be scarring for them, and I just can’t mix that right now,'” Samberg recalled.
Instead, Adams collaborated with Samberg on a different “SNL” skit titled “Hero Song,” which featured the actor as an inept would-be superhero. Samberg said the experience of filming “Hero Song” made it clear to him why Adams had made the right call.
“When we went out to shoot ‘Hero Song,’ within five minutes, a mother and her little girl walked up, and the look on the little girl’s face upon seeing Amy Adams, I was like, ‘Oh, she was so right,'” Samberg shared.
He went on to say that Adams’ decision had been “very instructive” for him, as it made him realize the unique responsibility that comes with being a beloved public figure, especially one who appeals to young audiences.
“It’s not something I even ever thought about in our line of work, you know what I mean? Of course, she has an obligation and a responsibility to those kids, and she took it very seriously. And I remember being really impressed by that,” Samberg said.
This is not the first time Adams has demonstrated her commitment to protecting her fanbase. In a 2013 interview, the actress spoke about the importance of maintaining a sense of “mystery” around her personal life in order to avoid compromising the idealized image that young girls might have of her. “I believe it’s crucial to safeguard the purity of that,” Adams stated at the time. “I don’t want to destroy the dream for them.”
Samberg’s recollection of Adams’ decision to forgo the “very dirty” “SNL” sketch serves as a heartwarming reminder of the lengths that some celebrities will go to in order to uphold their responsibilities to their younger fans. By putting the wellbeing of her impressionable audience before her own comedic ambitions, Amy Adams has shown herself to be not only a talented performer but a truly admirable role model as well.
