Chris Martin, the frontman of the beloved British rock band, had a near-miss on stage this past Sunday, November 3rd, when he accidentally fell through an open trap door while performing at Marvel Stadium.
Concertgoers shared videos of Martin, 47, walking backwards down a raised runway, engaging with the adoring crowd, before he suddenly toppled forward through the open trap door. The audience responded with audible gasps as nearby crew members quickly rushed to help the singer back to his feet.
“That’s not planned!” After regaining his balance, Martin told the stunned crowd, “That’s not planned!” He then quipped, “Holy s—, that was nearly a YouTube moment!” He then thanked the quick-thinking crew member who managed to catch him.
This incident comes just three weeks after another high-profile stage mishap in Melbourne, when pop star Olivia Rodrigo, 21, fell through a trap door while performing at the Rod Laver Arena as part of her “Guts” tour.
From March 2022 to September 2025, Coldplay’s massive “Music of the Spheres World Tour” will conclude with a 10-day stint at London’s Wembley Stadium. After their final show in Melbourne, Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion will head to Sydney to finish their Australian leg before moving on to New Zealand.
Martin jokes that the mishap nearly turned into a “YouTube moment,” demonstrating the band’s resilience despite the scare. The tour has been filled with many viral moments, including surprise guest appearances from the likes of Maggie Rogers, Shawn Mendes, Michael J. Fox, and more.
Just this past summer, Martin even took Coldplay’s music out of the stadium for an impromptu street performance in Dublin, joined by special guests like Burna Boy, Little Simz, Elyanna, and Tini.
In addition to their thrilling live shows, Coldplay is also preparing to release more new music. The group dropped its 10th studio album, “Moon Music,” in June, along with the single “feels like falling in love.” However, Martin has revealed that the band only plans to create 12 “proper albums” before stepping away from fresh material.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real,” he said in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “So if we do something creatively beyond touring after that, it will either be something different, a side project, or a compilation of things we hadn’t finished.”
As Coldplay continues their record-breaking global tour, fans can no doubt expect more unforgettable moments, whether they involve unplanned stage antics or surprise musical collaborations. For now, Chris Martin appears to be embracing his nearly disastrous fall, demonstrating once again that the show must continue.
