Homicide: Life on the Street Finally Gets a Streaming Update

One of the best cop shows is finally heading to streaming services. Series writer and producer David Simon confirmed the news on social media.

He wrote on X, “Word is that NBC has managed to finally secure the music rights necessary to sell Homicide: Life On The Streets to a streaming platform.”

He also added, “Andre, Richard, Yaphet, Ned, and so many others who labored on that wonderful show on both sides of the camera will soon regain a full share of their legacy. Stay tuned for more details.”

It is currently unclear which network the series will air on. In the U.S., NBCUniversal holds its rights, and in the international right, Fremantle holds it.

Simon first hinted at the series’ arrival on streaming services in December 2023. He shared a post on X in which he wrote, “I have been informed by a reliable source that NBC/Universal is at last attempting, along with Fremantle on the overseas rights, to clear music rights on #Homicide for eventual streaming.”

Homicide: Life on the Street is a police drama created by Paul Attanasio based on David Simon’s book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. The series premiered on NBC in January 1993 and ended in May 1999. It ran for seven seasons which contains 122 episodes. In 2000, the series was succeeded by television film titled Homicide: The Movie, which served as the finale of the show.

The series centered around a fictional version of the Baltimore Police Department’s homicide unit. It was different from other cop shows in that major cases were sometimes left unsolved to maintain realism. The series was appreciated for its compelling storyline and cast performances.

Andrew Braugher played Detective Frank Pembleton in the series, which made him a breakout star. He died in December last year, battling lung cancer at the age of 61.

The other major cast of the show includes Daniel Baldwin as Beau Felton, Richard Belzer as John Munch, Clark Johnson as Meldrick Lewis, and Yaphet Kotto as Al Giardello.

The show won many awards, including Television Critics Association Awards in 1996, 1997, and 1998. It became the first series to win three Peabody Awards. It also received several Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing. Andre Braugher won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.

There is no official announcement regarding when it will arrive on the streaming services, so we will have to wait a little longer for further updates.
