James Gunn’s Superman Adds Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald
Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald joined the cast list for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman venture. They will play the characters of Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, respectively. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news, and Gunn also confirmed their casting through his Instagram post.
David Corenswet plays the titular role in the movie as Clark Kent/Superman, a journalist on the Daily Planet. Rachel Brosnahan stars as Lois Lane, the Daily Planet’s reporter. The other cast members include Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Sara Sampaio, Nicholas Hoult, Beck Bennett, and Skyler Gisondo.
Hoover’s Grant is a gossip columnist in The Daily Planet and first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #424. Kent initially introduced her as a romantic interest, but their relationship ended when Kent fell in love with Lois. The character was created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway and appeared in several shows, including Supergirl and My Adventures with Superman.
McDonald will portray the character of Ron Troupe, a reporter for the Daily Planet. The character’s creators are Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett, and it first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #480. The character has appeared in many shows, including Superman: The Animated Series, Smallville, and Superman & Lois.
In the upcoming movie, James Gunn is the director and writer, drawing inspiration from the characters found in DC Comics. Gunn is famous for directing superhero films including Super, The Suicide Squad, and the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Peter Safran is the film’s producer, and filming is currently taking place in Atlanta. The filming started on February 29, which happened to be the day of Superman’s canonical birthday. Gunn announced the start of production on his Instagram account.
He wrote, “Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today (February 29).” He also added when it would hit the theater by stating, “Making our way to you July 2025.
It is scheduled to release in theaters on July 11, 2025. Initially, the film was titled ‘Superman: Legacy’, but Gunn changed it to simply ‘Superman’.
There are not many details revealed about the plot of the movie. However, it will focus Kent’s journey on how he balances his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
Hoover started her acting career in the movie Frank and portrayed the lead role in Sorority Forever. She appeared in several Gunn’s movies, including Super, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Belko Experiment, and The Suicide Squad. She also acted in the Netflix film Holidate.
McDonald played notable characters in several films, including Grease 2, Leave It to Beaver, The House Bunny, and About Last Night. He also appeared in the HBO series Hacks and Disney’s Secret Invasion.
