Maya Hawke Admits Due to Nepotism She Casts in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Maya Hawke, daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, acknowledged she got a role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because of her family’s influence. In a recent interview with the Times of London, she opened up about nepotism and her path to Hollywood.

She talked about whether she deserved the success she got in the industry; she said, “Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway.”

She continued, “I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job, and go to open casting roles.”

She further discussed her relationship with her parents, her acceptance of the role of nepotism, and her belief that it’s acceptable to tease those who have opportunities due to nepotism.

“It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be.” She explained, “My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.”

Hawke’s first major role was Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019. She recalled her interview with The Hollywood Reporter at that time, in which she stated that she got the project’s audition “through the normal channels through my agents,” and she did the audition with her dad in her bedroom and got a callback.

Later, the actress got teased for her statement, in which she claimed that she got the role in the film based on skill alone. In a recent interview, she clarified it by stating, “I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned.”

She also added, “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons; I think I totally did.”

Hawke got wide recognition for playing the character Robin Buckley in Netflix’s Stranger Things. Her acting debut was in the BBC adaptation of Little Woman. Her film works include Fear Street Part One: 1994, Do Revenge, and Asteroid City. She recently released her third album, Chaos Angel, and her other albums are Blush and Moss. She also voiced the character of Anxiety in the upcoming animated film Inside Out 2.
