Peaky Blinders Movie Gets Greenlit And Cillian Murphy Returns as Tommy Shelby

The much-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie gets greenlit from Netflix, and Cillian Murphy will reprise his iconic character, Tommy Shelby. The recent update came after years of speculation and hints.

The untitled film will be directed by Tom Harper, who directed the half-episode of the first season of the series. He is also known for his works on The Aeronauts, Wild Rose, and War & Peace. Steven Knight will pen down the script, and he also served as producer along with Murphy, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley.

The executive producers are Harper, Jamie Glazebrook, David Kosse, David Mason, and Andrew Warren. The production is set to start this year, and there are currently no other cast members attached to Murphy. The plot details have not been revealed yet, but it have been described as the series’ continuation.

Murphy played the character of Thomas Shelby in the series, who turned into a gangster in a crime group after the end of World War I.

Murphy expressed his excitement about the upcoming movie by stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me …,” and continued, “It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Knight disclosed the movie’s plans in 2021, just before the series concluded, and throughout the years, he expressed his enthusiasm for the project. After the confirmation of the film, he shared his excitement that the movie was happening.

He said, “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Harper said, “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive.”

He also shared his enthusiasm about reuniting with Steve and Murphy to bring the movie to a worldwide audience.

The series aired on BBC in 2013, Netflix acquired the international rights in 2014, and the final and sixth seasons premiered in 2022. The series got wider appreciation for its storyline and cast performances and became one of the most successful shows.

Murphy’s recent appearance was in Christopher Nolan’s biographical film Oppenheimer, in which he grabbed the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Actor. He will executive produce his 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later.
