Loved “Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland is using her platform to shine a light on the crucial issue of domestic violence. Variety is honoring the 33-year-old actress, who recently experienced an abusive relationship herself, with the inaugural Variety Courage Award for her tireless efforts to support survivors.
Speaking Out To End The Silence
In a candid interview, Hyland opened up about the “scars” left by her past abuse, candidly admitting that the trauma “kind of scars her soul a little bit.” However, rather than staying silent, the actress is determined to use her voice to help others in similar situations.
“For thousands of years now, we didn’t talk about it,” Hyland said. “The community hasn’t shared enough, I believe. I believe that by increasing the conversation about it, more women, men, and individuals in abusive relationships will feel more comfortable discussing it with their loved ones.
Advocating For Pet-Friendly Shelters
Hyland’s advocacy work extends beyond just sharing her personal story. She is also passionately championing the need for domestic violence shelters to be pet-friendly, as many survivors are reluctant to leave their animals behind with an abusive partner.
“A lot of people who have been in an abusive relationship have had pets,” Hyland explained. “Many times, I couldn’t have survived without my dog.” However, individuals can also utilize animals as a tool for manipulation and strategy. Therefore, their lives are put at risk in an attempt to harm someone through an animal.
Honoring Hyland’s Courage
Variety will be honoring Hyland’s brave advocacy work at their upcoming Power of Women gala in Los Angeles, presenting her with the first-ever Variety Courage Award, presented by Purina.
“I’m so honored,” Hyland said of the recognition. “A lot of shelters do not allow pets, and figuring out the logistics of how to get out [of the relationship] and do that, especially with animals, is so important,” Hyland stated.
Healing From The Trauma
Despite the ongoing scars from her past abuse, Hyland remains committed to the ongoing process of healing and recovery. The actress acknowledged that the relationship’s PTSD can linger, leading to feelings of guilt and a desire to avoid discussing the trauma.
“It’s almost like you don’t want to talk about it anymore,” Hyland shared. “You want it resolved, and that’s that.” I fully comprehend the pattern of dissociation involved. I am very guilty about it myself… I didn’t realize that part of myself had healed until I experienced a trigger.
Inspiring Others Through Vulnerability
Hyland’s “Modern Family” co-star, Julie Bowen, praised the actress for her strength and resilience in the face of adversity, saying, “Without adversity, there can be no way to define one’s character and sense of self. From a very early age, Sarah’s path has forced her to face challenges, both physical and emotional. She has met each moment with determination, grace, and vulnerability.”
By courageously sharing her story and advocating for domestic violence survivors, Hyland is using her platform to inspire others and foster a much-needed dialogue around this critical issue. Her commitment to healing and supporting those in need is a true testament to her character. As Hyland noted, “It’s really important to be able to help those in need.” The Variety Courage Award recognizes her remarkable efforts on a national stage.
