Squid Game Reportedly Completes Filming Seasons 2 and 3; Plans to Release in 2024
The popular thriller drama Squid Game completed its second and third seasons of filming in June. According to the report from OSEN, on June 11 and 12, the cast and crew of the series celebrated their wrap-up party in Gapyeong. A source told them, “It’s true that Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time. To be precise, a long story was filmed, which will be split and released as Seasons 2 and 3.”
It is also reported that the second season will have six episodes, and the third season will have six to seven episodes. Season 2 is expected to be released on Netflix in the second half of 2024. It was initially reported that both seasons premiered with a short gap. But Netflix clarified the rumors.
They commented, “We’re in the final stages of preparing for the release of ‘Squid Game’ Season 2. We can’t provide definitive details about Season 3 yet.”
The plot of the upcoming season is currently unknown. However, the actor Lee Jung-jae told RadioTimes that the script of the second season was “even more interesting than season 1” and there were a lot of “unpredictable moments,” which gave the viewers a “roller coaster of emotions.”
He said, “One thing I felt while reading the script is that there’s an even deeper emotion that’s discovered within season 2.” He also added that there were many twists and turns in the movie.
In a conversation with the Business Insider, Lee commented that the second season will arrive in December this year. However, it has yet to be announced by Netflix for its official release date.
Lee Jung Jae, along with Lee Byung Hun and Wi Ha Joon, will return to the second season. The other cast members include Im Siwn, Park Gyu Young, Kang Ha Neul, Won Ji An, Jo Yu Ri, Yang Dong Geun, and Lee Jin Wook.
The Korean drama Squid Game was released on Netflix in September 2021 and was created by Hwang Dong-hyunk. The first season follows 456 players who participated in a secret contest that involved deadly children’s games to win 45.6 billion.
Since its release, it has become the most-watched series on Netflix and reached 1.65 billion views in its first four weeks. The first season was nominated for 14 Primetime Emmy Awards, and Lee became the first Asian actor to grab the award for a non-English part by winning the award of Outstanding Lead Actor.
