Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department Makes Record: The First Album to Hit 1 Billion on Spotify in One Week
Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poets Department made history by becoming the first album to hit 1 billion streams on Spotify within five days. The pop star’s new album was released on April 19, and it reached the first position to become 300 million streams in a single day; it broke her record for the album “Midnights” in 2022, which had 700000 streams in a week.
The Tortured Poets Department became the most pre-saved album countdown page in the history of Spotify before the day of its release. Swift also became the most streamed artist on Spotify in a single day by beating the record set by her release of “1989” last year.
Swift’s 11th studio record arrived on Friday at midnight with 16 new songs, including the lead single “Fortnight,” which features Post Malone. Two hours later, Swift doubled the tracklist length by adding 15 additional tracks. Just before the release of TTPD, Swift announced that “Fortnight” would be the first single.
She wrote on Instagram about Malone, saying that she was a huge fan of Post, and his musical experimentation and melodies stick in our heads forever. She continued the post by saying that she got the opportunity to witness his magic when they worked together on Fortnight.
Melone shared a photo of him and Taylor Swift hanging out together on a couch, posted after the album release. Through the post, he expressed gratitude for collaborating with Taylor Swift on the song “Fortnight.”
He wrote the caption, “It’s once in a lifetime that someone like Taylor Swift comes into this world.” He also added that he was honored by helping her journey. Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, liked Melone’s post and supported him.
Taylor Swift announced the release of her eleventh studio album during the 2024 Grammy Awards when she made an acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights. During that speech, she thanked her fans for supporting the 10th album, Midnights, and she talked about her new album which has been kept as a secret for two years.
Just after she left the stage, her social media account shared more details regarding the new album, including the cover art and the title (The Tortured Poets Department) with the caption “All fair in love and poetry.”
During her Eras Tour in Tokyo, Swift told their audience that after finishing “Midnight,” she immediately started to work on “Tortured Poets.” In her tour of Melbourne, she spoke about how much the album meant for her. She said it was the album more than any other one she ever made.
Taylor Swift, Aaron Dessner, and Jack Antonoff wrote and produced the album. The second part of the album, which was subtitled as “The Anthology,” was released in a surprise two hours after the first.
