‘Totally Spies’ Live-Action Series is in Development at Amazon
A live-action TV series based on the animated spy-fi series ‘Totally Spies’ is in development at Amazon, and Will Ferrell will executive produce the reboot series.
The original French series, created by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel, was released in 2001 and ended in 2015 after 182 episodes. The series quickly gained popularity among viewers with its story and spy-genre action.
The series follows the story of three teenage girls, Sam, Clover, and Alex, who live in Beverly Hills. They were living a double life, working as secret agents for the World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP). They were recruited to solve a crime situation across the world by Jerry, the organization’s leader. The series also concentrated on the subplots, which showed the girls’s school life as students.
Ferrell executives produced the series along with Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor under the Gloria Sanchez Productions banner and Banijay Kids & Family CEO Benoît Di Sabatino.
Di Sabatino shared his excitement to join the team. He said, “’Totally Spies!’ is a huge success for Banijay Kids & Family, having been translated in 60 languages and sold to more than 220 territories.”
He also added, “Rola Bauer approached me for a live-action adaptation, and we were thrilled to partner with Amazon MGM Studios,” and continued, “We are honored to join such a stronghold of female-focused producers in Gloria Sanchez Productions to produce for Prime Video.”
Elbaum also shared her happiness to be part of the live action. She said, “Will, Alix, and I are thrilled to be joining our partners at Amazon and Banijay to bring ‘Totally Spies!’ to life as a live-action show,” and further added, “The themes of girl-power, never sacrificing friendship, fun, or your true self to be successful resonated with us then, and feel ripe to revisit now.”
The animated series created a cult following and started a media franchise that tied up several products, including video games, comic books, and novels. The series also led to the creation of a prequel film, Totally Spies! The Movie, which had a theatrical release in France in 2009. A spin-off series was also created, titled The Amazing Spiez, which premiered in 2009 and ran for two seasons.
Last year, a seventh season, which was the continuation of the show, aired in France, and it will premiere in the United States later this year on Cartoon Network.
Currently, there is no creative team attached to Amazon’s live-action, and there is also no release date available for now.
