In a groundbreaking achievement for Monmouth University’s basketball program, sophomore sensation Abdi Bashir Jr. has etched his name in the record books by becoming the first Hawk ever to receive the prestigious Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week award from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
The young guard’s extraordinary performance last week left basketball fans and analysts stunned as he showcased his exceptional shooting skills in two remarkable games. Bashir’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as he joins an elite group of players honored this week, including Jaron Pierre of Jacksonville State, Maxine Raynaud of Stanford, John Tonje of Wisconsin, and Sonny Wilson of Toledo.
Breaking Records With Precision
Bashir’s week began impressively with a 25-point performance against Northern Illinois, where he also contributed five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. However, it was his following game that truly cemented his place in basketball history. Facing #24 ranked Rutgers, Bashir exploded for an incredible 38 points, including a program-record 10 three-pointers. This outstanding display of sharpshooting wasn’t just a personal best—it marked the highest scoring performance by any player against Rutgers since 1977.
His accuracy from beyond the arc was particularly impressive, as Bashir connected on 10 of 17 attempts from three-point range. These 10 three-pointers not only set a new Monmouth record but also ranked as the second-highest in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) history. Adding to his remarkable efficiency, Bashir showed perfect form from the free-throw line, making all 11 of his attempts during the week.
A Historic Honor
The Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week award carries special significance in college basketball. The nation’s oldest basketball award, Oscar Robertson, the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year, gave it additional prestige in 1998.
Coach King Rice’s program has seen many talented players, but Bashir’s 38-point outburst stands as the second-highest scoring game during Rice’s tenure. The performance was even more special as it took place at Jersey Mike’s Arena, where Bashir’s 10 three-pointers now stand as the second-most ever made in the venue’s history.
Looking Ahead
Bashir’s outstanding week, during which he averaged 31.5 points and 3.0 rebounds, has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting season for Monmouth basketball. Youngstown State will be the opponent for the sophomore guard and his teammates when they return to action on Thursday in the Axe ‘Em Classic.
The basketball world will be watching closely as the season progresses, with Bashir potentially in the running for even more honors. At the end of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the National Player of the Year award, and the 2025 Men’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas will announce the winner. The Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis will host the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon, following the formal presentation.
As Monmouth University celebrates this historic achievement, Bashir’s record-breaking performance serves as a reminder of the exciting young talent emerging in college basketball. His remarkable shooting display and growing list of accolades suggest that this may be just the beginning of what could be a truly special career.
