A Tragic Ski Accident Claims The Life Of Promising Athlete Matilde Lorenzi
Matilde Lorenzi died following a severe skiing accident in Val Gardena. She was 20 years old (she would have turned 21 on November 15) and was a specialist in speed events. The young athlete was originally from Sestriere.
During a morning training session in Val Senales, South Tyrol, Lorenzi, a member of the junior women’s team and registered with Centro Sportivo Impero, suffered a fall. According to the initial reconstruction, Lorenzi, a young promise in Italian skiing and a member of the third national team, was descending the Gravand G1 slope when her skis spread apart, causing her to lose contact with the snow and hit her face violently on the icy ground. At that point, one of her skis came off, and the 20-year-old tumbled off the slope.
Coaches present at the scene immediately intervened and will be heard to further clarify the dynamics of the accident, along with the Carabinieri from the Selva Val Gardena training center, who were joined shortly after by colleagues from the Senales station handling the investigations. The course’s safety conditions, already verified, appear to be in order, with the correct placement of protections.
